<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What an old idea about human life taught me about movement, choice and the spaces we design.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n I grew up in Korea learning that the fundamentals of human life could be reduced to three characters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u8863 \u98df \u4f4f<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n ui, sik, ju.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n What we wear. What we eat. Where we live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Clothing, food and shelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was taught so early, and repeated so naturally, that I never thought to question it. \uc758\uc2dd\uc8fc<\/em> was not presented as one possible way of describing human needs. It simply felt like the architecture of life itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then, recently, I encountered a fourth character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u884c.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And suddenly the formula I had carried since childhood felt incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u8863 \u98df \u4f4f \u884c.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We wear. The discovery led me to Sun Yat-sen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That made the connection strangely personal. Years ago, while living in Hong Kong, I had visited the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum just down the street from where I was living. Hong Kong was formative in his education and political thinking, and the museum traces that relationship. I had walked through the history without knowing that one small part of his thinking would return to me years later, in an entirely different context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a 1924 lecture on Minsheng<\/em>\u2014the livelihood or life of the people\u2014Sun Yat-sen discussed what human beings fundamentally require. He noted that clothing, food and housing had traditionally been considered three basic needs, but argued that there was another:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u884c \u2014 the ability to go, to travel, to move.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For him, movement was important enough to sit beside food, clothing and shelter as one of four essential conditions of life. In his 1924 national development program, those same four needs appeared again, with roads and canals specifically connected to enabling people to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Almost a century later, the thought feels remarkably contemporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps more contemporary than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We tend to treat movement as secondary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Home is a destination. Movement is what happens in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We measure it in minutes. We optimize it. We shorten it. We complain about it when it takes too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But what if this hierarchy is wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What if movement is not merely the empty space separating the meaningful parts of life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What if movement is itself one of the ways life happens?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We leave home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We cross a city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We enter an unfamiliar neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We travel to another country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We walk into a store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We approach an object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We turn toward another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We discover something we did not intend to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Human life is not a collection of stationary moments connected by transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is continuous movement through environments, relationships, decisions and possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps this is why the character \u884c<\/strong> interests me so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In \u8863\u98df\u4f4f\u884c, its immediate meaning is movement or travel. But the wider semantic field of \u884c reaches toward going, doing, acting, carrying something out<\/em>. I do not mean that these meanings are linguistically interchangeable. They are not. What interests me is the conceptual proximity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To move<\/strong> is very often to begin to act<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Movement creates encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Encounter creates possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Possibility asks for choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And choice turns a person from observer into participant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This changes the way I think about mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The transportation industry naturally speaks about getting people from A to B. Increasingly it speaks about mobility<\/em>: a broader ecosystem of vehicles, infrastructure, services and technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But perhaps there is an even larger human proposition hidden underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mobility gives us agency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ability to move expands the territory in which a person can participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A child who can reach a school has access to a different future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person who can cross a city has access to different work, communities, relationships and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A traveller becomes temporarily liberated from the routines through which they normally understand the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even the smallest movement\u2014the decision to enter rather than pass by\u2014can alter what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why I now read the phrase Movement that inspires<\/strong> differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not as a description of vehicles moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not even simply as people moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But as the possibility that movement changes what becomes available to us afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Movement can expose us to something unfamiliar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It can change our point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It can provoke curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It can give us the conditions to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The most interesting form of movement, then, may not be displacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It may be transformation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For more than twenty years, I have worked with physical spaces where brands and people meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For much of that time, our industry has talked about those spaces as objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A flagship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A showroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A pop-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We photograph them empty, because emptiness allows us to admire the architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But an empty space has never been the thing that interested me most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What interests me is what begins to happen when a person enters it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Where do they look first?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What draws them forward?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What makes them slow down?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What makes them cross an invisible threshold?<\/p>\n\n\n\n When do they become curious enough to touch?<\/p>\n\n\n\n When does browsing become consideration?<\/p>\n\n\n\n When does information become desire?<\/p>\n\n\n\n When does a person ask another human being for help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n When does hesitation become choice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is why I call my thesis Retail as Cinema<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cinema is not a collection of beautiful sets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A set becomes meaningful because something unfolds through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone enters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is sequence, tension, revelation, emotion and consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most importantly, there is movement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same is true of physical experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A meaningful retail space is not merely designed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is choreographed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Its architecture creates the conditions for movement. Movement produces encounters. Encounters generate emotion, interpretation and choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The customer is therefore not an audience standing outside the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The customer moves through<\/strong> the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And through that movement becomes part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For years, design language has been full of claims about controlling consumer behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Guide the customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Drive conversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Create traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Push the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I have become increasingly uncomfortable with that vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People are not pieces being moved across a commercial chessboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The task is not to control movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is to create environments rich enough in cues, possibilities and meaning that people can exercise their own agency within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is where choice architecture<\/strong> enters my thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Architecture can make a possibility visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A threshold can invite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A sequence can build anticipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A change in scale can create intimacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person can be given permission to explore without immediately being asked to purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Expertise can appear at exactly the moment when curiosity becomes uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technology can disappear until it becomes useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of these things determines the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They create conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The person completes the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps that is the difference between a space that merely contains commerce and one that creates experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I keep returning to the four characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u8863 \u2014 what we wear.<\/strong> \u98df \u2014 what we eat.<\/strong> \u4f4f \u2014 where we dwell.<\/strong> \u884c \u2014 how we move.<\/strong> The first three surround the body with the conditions of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The fourth sends the body outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That distinction feels important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because \u884c introduces possibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It reminds us that human beings do not simply consume, inhabit and possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We change position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We make choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps that is why movement deserves its place among the fundamentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because transportation became important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But because a human life is not lived standing still.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Years ago, I walked through the Sun Yat-sen Museum in Hong Kong without noticing this idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, it found me again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is also a form of movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An idea travels through history, through languages, through places and through different chapters of one person’s life until suddenly it arrives somewhere new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when it does, something moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not necessarily the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes, the point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Movement is not what happens between destinations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It is one of the fundamental ways we participate in life.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" What an old idea about human life taught me about movement, choice and the spaces we design. Work is a destination.
The restaurant is a destination.
The shop is a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nFrom mobility to agency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nAnd this brought me back to retail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nSpace does not make people act. It makes action possible.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
